Stone Named C-USA All-Defensive; Newbill Earns C-USA All-Freshman Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior Sai'Quon Stone has been named to the Conference USA All-Defensive team, while freshman guard D.J. Newbill was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team, in a vote by the league's 12 coaches and various media, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Stone was named to the All-Defensive team for the second straight year.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is averaging 2.2 rebounds and 0.7 steals. He has recorded four rebounds seven times this season. Stone had a season-high six rebounds at Marshall and had multiple steals four times.

Joining Stone on the team was SMU's Papa Dia, UAB's Aaron Johnson, Zamal Nixon of Houston and Julyan Stone of UTEP.

D.J. Newbill

Newbill becomes the sixth Golden Eagle to be named to the All-Freshman team, and the first since R.L. Horton in 2008. The Philadelphia, Pa., native has scored double figures in 13 of 30 games this year and has recorded six double-doubles on the year. He is currently third on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game and is 11th in the league in rebounding with 6.4 rebounds. He is also second in offensive rebounds (3.1). He has led team in rebounds nine times.

Newbill is connecting on 52.3% from the floor. He was named C-USA Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 21 and is in the top ten of Southern Miss' freshman list in rebounding (6th - 191), assists (8th - 51) and free throw made (5th - 85).

Joining Newbill on the team was Memphis' Will Barton and Tarik Black, DeAndre Kane of Marshall and Tulsas's Jordan Clarkson.

Southern Miss, which earned the fifth seed, opens play at the Buick Conference USA Tournament Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will face 12th-seeded Tulane. The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from IMG College.
