Wise Adds to Accolades with C-USA Freshman and Newcomer of Year Honors

March 6, 2007

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - As the only freshman to earn all-conference honors, Southern Miss guard Jeremy Wise was named the 2006-07 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Teammate Sai'Quon Stone was named to the All-Freshman team.

Wise set the Southern Miss record as the top freshman scorer in school history with 510 points. He also became the first Southern Miss player to reach 500 points in a season since 1998-99. Wise ranks fourth in Conference USA for scoring, averaging 17.6 ppg, and free throw percentage (.828).

The 6-foot-2 guard is the only Golden Eagle to start in every game this season and has scored in double figures in 27 of 29 games, including 20-straight currently. He also has 10 games of 20 or more points this season, including a season-best 28 at Memphis on Jan. 27. Following that performance, he was named C-USA Player of the Week, becoming the first freshman in four years to earn the honor.

Wise is the first freshman to win this award since Anthony Richards won the Freshman of the Year in 1995-96.

Wise is joined on the all-freshman team by Stone, John Fields of East Carolina, Tulane's Kevin Sims and Tulsa's Ben Uzoh. The 6-foot-6 Brooklyn, N.Y., native averaged 10.3 points per game this season to go along with 5.4 rebounds a contest. He ranks No. 3 on the Golden Eagle single-season free throws made chart with 157 and No. 4 on the free throws attempted list.

Senior Jeremy Hunt and junior Joey Dorsey of Memphis were selected the Sixth Man of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, as voted by the conference's 12 head coaches and select media.

Dorsey leads the inaugural All-Defensive Team, as the 2006-07 Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Dorsey on the All-Defensive squad is teammate Antonio Anderson, seniors Paul Delaney III of UAB and Oliver Lafayette of Houston, as well as sophomore Bamba Fall of SMU.

The Golden Eagles open play in the 2007 C-USA Basketball Championship presented by Aeropostale at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday. Southern Miss, the No. 6 seed in the event, will face 11th-seeded SMU at the FedExForum in Memphis. Although the game will not be televised, fans can get the game via online with CSTV All-Access.
