Basketball Duo Named SAAC Players of the Week
Both teams are headed to Birmingham next week for C-USA Championships
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss basketball standouts Quinton Campbell and Keri Jewett-Giles have been named the SAAC Players of the Week, as voted by their peers.
Campbell, a redshirt-senior, was named the C-USA Player of the Week on Monday. He was electric for the Golden Eagles, averaging a double-double, as he nearly led his team to a road sweep of Rice and North Texas. He scored 18 points on Thursday as Southern Miss rallied from a 52-34 deficit with 13 minutes to play and even had a lead in overtime. Campbell played 39 minutes in that marathon. The loss surely motivated him on Saturday, spoiling North Texas’ Senior Day by scoring his team’s first 11 points en route to a 24-point, 13-rebound game. The latter tied a career-high as did his 10 field goals. It was Southern Miss’ largest margin of victory on the road in the Doc Sadler era and put Southern Miss in the C-USA Tournament for the first time since its two-year postseason ban.
The men will conclude their regular season Saturday afternoon at Louisiana Tech. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. CT and will air on ASN.
Jewett-Giles, a sophomore, was key to the Lady Eagles getting revenge on Rice and North Texas this past week.
The sophomore guard scored poured in 23 points against the Owls, tying her career high. Against North Texas the Florida native snagged a season-high five steals, claiming nine total during the week. Southern Miss’ sixth woman has now notched 17 double scoring games of her career, three of them being games with 20 or more. Jewett-Giles went 11-for-12 from the charity stripe during the week and shot .579 from the floor.
The Lady Eagles have Senior Day on Friday versus Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m.
Both teams will receive their first-round C-USA matchups this weekend. The tournament runs Wednesday - Sunday in Birmingham, and fans looking to purchase tickets through Southern Miss have until the end of Friday to do so.
