Men's Basketball to Honor the 1959-61 Teams This Weekend
The teams combined to go 46-5 over two years.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi athletics department will honor the 1959-60 and 1960-61 men's basketball teams during halftime of the Golden Eagles game with East Carolina on Saturday, March 2, as part of the school's 100 years of Southern Miss athletics celebration. Tip-off for the game is at 7 p.m. CT.
The teams posted a combined record of 46-5 and were coached by the late Fred Lewis. They combined to win a school-record 26 consecutive games over the two-year span.
The 1959-60 squad finished the year with a 23-2 record. It was ranked fourth in the final UPI College Division national poll behind top-ranked Evansville, Tennessee State and Wittenberg College. The Southerners defeated Florida State, Louisiana Tech and twice knocked off Louisiana-Monroe.
The 1960-61 team was 23-3 and was ranked second in the final UPI College Division national poll behind top-ranked Tennessee State and third in the final Associated Press College Division poll.
Players expected to return for this weekend's festivities include Roy Danforth, Don Clinton, Richie Goldberg, Clyde Mills, Jackie Laird and Wayne Pulliam, and well as athletic trainer Larry (Doc) Harrington.
