Gary Flowers Named Finalist for Cellular South Howell Trophy
Becomes first Golden Eagle to be named finalist.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior forward Gary Flowers was named one of three finalists for the 2011 Cellular South Howell Trophy, awarded annually to the best college basketball player in Mississippi.
Flowers will be joined by Mississippi State's Dee Bost and Chris Warren of Ole Miss. Flowers is the first Golden Eagle to be named a finalist in the seven year history of the award.
The Dallas, Texas native is currently third in Conference USA with 19.3 points per game, which is also 35th nationally. He is also fifth in blocks (1.6), sixth in rebounding (7.7), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.420) and eighth in field goal percentage (.476).
Flowers has scored in double-figures in 26-of-27 games. He has led the team in scoring 19 times and in rebounding 13 times. He was named Conference USA Player of the Week three times, becoming the first Golden Eagle to earn three Player of the Week awards in one year. He also became the fourth fastest player to score 1,000 points, achieving the feat in just 59 games.
The winner of the 2011 Howell Trophy will be announced Monday March 7, 2011 in luncheon ceremonies at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson beginning at 11:15 am. Due to previous traveling obligations to the Conference USA Tournament, Southern Miss legend Clarence Weatherspoon will fill in for Flowers at the Luncheon.
