Golden Eagles Advance to C-USA Championship Game
Dwayne Davis scored 27 points and Jonathan Mills had a double-double to lead Southern Mississippi over UTEP 85-67 Friday in a Conference-USA semifinal match.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball teams hosts league-leader UTEP this Saturday, February 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT and will be nationally-televised by CBS Sports Network.
This is the 20th meeting all-time between Southern Miss and UTEP. The Miners lead the series, 12-7, all-time. Southern Miss has won the last two and three of the last four. In Hattiesburg, the Golden Eagles lead, 5-3.
Southern Miss enters today's game with a 22-5 record and 9-3 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak on Thursday, defeating UTSA, 85-56.
Senior guard Neil Watson leads the team with 11.7 points. He leads Conference USA and is fourth in the country (as of Feb. 20) in free throw percentage, connecting on 93.2-percent from the charity stripe. He is also seventh in the league in assists (4.1) and is eighth in steals (1.6). Senior forward Michael Craig is also scoring 11.5 points while adding a team-high 7.5 boards, which is seventh in C-USA. He is also fifth in the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 58.8-percent from the floor.
Senior forward Daveon Boardingham is averaging 10.7 points per game and is pulling down 4.5 rebounds per game. He is also connecting on 59.3-percent from the field, which is third in C-USA. Senior guard Jerrold Brooks is scoring 9.7 points and junior forward Aaron Brown is averaging 9.0 points.
Southern Miss is averaging 72.9 points per game and is leading C-USA by allowing just 62.9. The Golden Eagles are connecting on 46.7% from the field, which is second in the conference, and 34.3% from three while allowing 42.3% from the floor and 34.8% from behind the arc. UTEP is scoring 70.2 points per game and is second in the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 63.4 points. The Miners are connecting on 46.9-percent from the floor, which leads Conference USA and 34.8-percent from three. They also lead the league in field goal percentage defense (.381) and are second in three-point percentage defense (.293). UTEP is also outrebounding its opponents, 36.3-to-34.5.
