HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team ends its three-game homestand this Tuesday, Feb. 22, when it hosts Loyola (N.O.) in its final non-conference game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT from Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss and Loyola (N.O.) will meet for the 41st time, with the Wolfpack holding a 25-15 advantage. In Hattiesburg, LUNO holds a 10-8 lead. Last year, the Golden Eagles took a 73-62 decision in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss has won four of the last six meetings.
Southern Miss enters the non-conference tilt with a 20-6 record, 9-4 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 72-55 victory over East Carolina last Saturday.
Senior forward Gary Flowers scored a career-high 32 points, while pulling down 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Junior guard Maurice Bolden was the only other Golden Eagle in double-figures, scoring 11 points and pulling down six rebounds. Freshman guard D.J. Newbill had eight points and nine boards. Senior guard R.L. Horton recorded seven points and five rebounds, and junior guard Angelo Johnson added seven assists.
Flowers currently leads Conference USA in points with 20.1, which is also 23rd in the nation (through 2/20). He is also fifth in blocks (1.7), fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.430), seventh in rebounding (7.6) and seventh in field goal percentage (.487). Horton is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 points.
Newbill is averaging 9.8 points and is 10th in the league with 6.8 rebounds. He is also connecting on 54.1-percent from the field. Johnson is adding 8.0 points and is fourth in the league with 4.4 assists while pulling down 3.7 rebounds. He is also 14th in C-USA in free throw percentage (.767). Senior forward Josimar Ayarza is scoring 7.6 points per game while grabbing 3.9 rebounds. Bolden is also adding 6.4 points.
As a team, the Golden Eagles are tops in Conference USA in scoring (75.7 ppg) while giving up 65.5 points. Southern Miss is connecting on 45.4-percent of its shots, while allowing its opposition to hit 41.4-percent. The Black and Gold are also leading the league with 39.3 rebounds and allowing just 31.2 to the opposition, a rebound margin of 8.1, which is tops in the conference and eighth in the country (through 2/20). Southern Miss is also recording 12.3 assists and 4.1 blocks.
Head coach Larry Eustachy is in his seventh season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled a 115-100 (.535) record during his time as head coach. In 19 years, Eustachy has an overall record of 375-245 (.605).
Loyola (N.O.) enters tonight's contest with a 13-12 record overall. The Wolfpack snapped a two-game losing streak last Saturday with a 96-91 overtime victory over Auburn-Montgomery.
Senior forward Ryan Brock led Loyola with 34 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Junior guard Corey Gray scored 33 points. Junior center Cameron Cates grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Tommy Stangl added nine points.
The Wolfpack are led by Brock with 22.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. He is also averaging 3.5 assists and connecting on 47.9-percent from the field. Gray is second on the team with 15.6 points. Freshman guard Robert Lovaglio is scoring 10.5 points and pulling down 5.1 boards.
As a team, Loyola (N.O.) is scoring 74.4 points per game and allowing 72.4. The Wolfpack are shooting 44.8-percent from the floor, while its opposition is hitting 41.8-percent of its shots. From behind the arc, LUNO is connecting on 35.2-percent and allowing 33.3-percent. Loyola, however, is getting outrebounded, 35.7-to-38.4.
Head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando is in his seventh season at the helm of the Loyola (N.O.) men's basketball program. He has compiled an 82-108 (.432) record as its head coach.
