Southern Miss Hosts UTEP in Mid-Week Contest

Golden Eagles Fall In 2OT Thriller, 76-68
C.J. Cooper scored six of his 16 points in the second overtime to lead UTEP to a 76-68 victory against Southern Mississippi on Wednesday night.
Southern Miss and UTEP will meet for the 18th time in a series that dates back to 1950. The Miners hold a 12-5 advantage and have won four of the last five meetings. In Hattiesburg, Southern Miss leads, 4-3. Last year, UTEP won in double-overtime, 76-68, in El Paso.
Southern Miss comes into tonight's game with a 20-6 record, 9-2 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are coming off an 86-82 overtime victory at East Carolina, last Saturday night.
Senior guard Dwayne Davis led Southern Miss with 23 points. It was his third straight 20-point game. Junior guard Neil Watson scored 17 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds and senior forward Jonathan Mills had 14 points and eight boards.
Davis is leading the team with 14.2 points while pulling down 4.3 rebounds. He is also ninth in Conference USA in three-point field goal percentage (.419). Junior guard Jerrold Brooks is second on the team with 10.6 points. Watson is averaging 9.2 points and is second in Conference USA in steals (1.9), third in three-point field goal percentage (.444) and fourth in assists (5.0). Mills is scoring 9.1 points and grabbing a team-high 6.9 boards a game, including 3.4 offensive rebounds per game, which is third in C-USA.
Southern Miss is scoring 74.0 points per game but allowing just 60.6, which leads Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are shooting 48.8-percent from the floor and allowing its opponents to just 40.1-percent, which are first and third in the league, respectively. The Golden Eagles lead C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (.383), and are fourth in three-point field goal percentage defense (.326). Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 35.4-to-28.7. The Golden Eagles are also leading the league and are second in the country in steals with 11.3.
Head coach Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. Tyndall is 20-6 (.769) as head coach of the Golden Eagles. He has compiled a 134-91 (.596) record in seven years as a head coach.
UTEP enters tonight's game with a 14-10 record, 7-4 in Conference USA. The Miners snapped a two-game losing streak last Saturday, defeating UCF, 73-58.
Junior center John Bohannon led all players with a game-high 16 points. Senior guard Konner Tucker scored 15 and sophomore forward Julian Washburn added 10.
Washburn leads UTEP with 12.2 points. Tucker is averaging 11.9 points. Bohannon is scoring 11.0 and leads the team with 6.2 rebounds. He is also second in Conference USA in field goal percentage (.588) and seventh in blocks (1.8). Senior guard Jacques Streeter is third in the league with 5.2 assists, while placing fifth in both free throw percentage (.817) and three-point field goal percentage (.438).
As a team, the Miners are scoring 64.4 points per game but are allowing just 62.0 points, which is tied for third in the conference. UTEP is connecting on 45.2% from the field, while the opposition is connecting on 41.7%. From three-point distance, UTEP is hitting 37.2%, which is second in Conference USA, and is allowing just 34.4%. The Miners are being outrebounded, 33.3-to-31.1.
Head coach Tim Floyd is in his third season at the helm of the UTEP men's basketball program. Floyd is 54-37 (.593) as head coach of the Miners. He has compiled a 382-217 (.638) record in 19 years as a head coach.
