Southern Miss-East Carolina Game Notes
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team attempts to end a five-game slide this Tuesday, Feb. 17, when it takes hosts East Carolina. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT in Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss enters Tuesday night's game with a 13-11 record, 3-7 in C-USA. The Golden Eagles are looking to snap a five-game losing streak after falling 72-47 to No. 8 Memphis Saturday afternoon.
Jeremy Wise led Southern Miss with 15 points and six assists. Courtney Beasley scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Craig Craft contributed with 10 rebounds and five rebounds.
Wise is ninth in the conference with 15.9 points per game, while being fourth in the conference with 4.83 assists. Beasley is tenth with 15.4 points and seventh with 7.0 rebounds. R.L. Horton is adding 12.7 points and Craig Craft is contributing 11.4 points and 5.6 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles are averaging 67.7 points per game, while allowing 65.9. Southern Miss is hitting 72.5-percent of its free throws and grabbing 35.1 rebounds. USM is currently second in the country in turnovers per game, committing just 9.9.
East Carolina enters tonight's game with a 13-11 record, 5-6 in conference. The Pirates have won three of their last four games and are coming off a 91-88 overtime victory over Rice.
Senior guard James Legan led East Carolina with 20 points while grabbing five rebounds. Freshman forward Darius Morrow scored 19 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the free throw line. Senior guard Sam Hinnant and sophomore guard Brock Young scored 17 points apiece, while Young added 14 assists and six rebounds.
Hinnant leads ECU with 15.1 points. Legan is averaging 12.6 points, and Young is scoring 11.9 points and a team-leading 7.9 assists. Freshman forward Darius Morrow is scoring 9.9 points and pulling down a team-high 6.9 rebounds, and sophomore guard Jamar Abrams is averaging 9.6 points and 4.9 points.
As a team, the Pirates are shooting 44.9-percent while allowing its opponents to shoot 44.4-percent from the field. East Carolina is scoring 75.0 points per game while allowing 73.8.
Head Coach Mack McCarthy is in his second season at the helm of the East Carolina men's basketball program. He has compiled a 24-30 (.444) record during his tenure as head coach. In 18 years, McCarthy has a 333-207 (.617) record.
Southern Miss goes on the road this Saturday, Feb. 21. The Golden Eagles travel to Birmingham, Ala. to face UAB in a nationally-televised game on CBS College Sports. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. CT.
