Men's Basketball Concludes Road Trip at East Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss concludes a two-game road trip Saturday night. The Golden Eagles look to get back on track when they face East Carolina in a 6:00 p.m. (CT) contest at Minges Coliseum.
Southern Miss and East Carolina will face each other for the 11th time in a series that dates back to 1971. The Pirates lead the series, 6-4, but the Golden Eagles have won the last four meetings. In games played in Greenville, the ECU holds a 4-1 advantage.
Earlier this year, Southern Miss defeated East Carolina, 92-69, in Hattiesburg. Jeremy Wise scored a game-high 28 points and R.L. Horton added 22. With the score tied, 16-16, at the 12:45 mark of the opening half, Wise triggered a 13-1 run over a three-plus minute run scoring the first six points of the run with a 3-pointer and three-straight free throws. The Golden Eagles used that run to pull away in the contest as they outscored the visitors 39-14 the remainder of the half. The advantage never dipped below the 19 points, as Southern Miss converted 50 percent of its shots (13-of-26) over the final 20 minutes. Courtney Beasley added 15 points for the Golden Eagles, while Sai'Quon Stone added six points, a season-high 10 rebounds and a career-best tying six assists. Reserve John Fields tallied a team-high 13 points for ECU, while Cory Farmer, Sam Hinnant and Brock Young all tallied 10 points for the Pirates.
The Golden Eagles are led by guard Jeremy Wise. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 18.8 points per game. Right behind him is freshman R.L. Horton with 12.3, junior Courtney Beasley with 11.2 and sophomore Sai'Quon Stone at 8.3. Gjio Bain leads Southern Miss on the boards, pulling down 5.8 rebounds a game.
Southern Miss is coming off a 78-63 loss at Tulsa last Saturday. Jeremy Wise led Southern Miss with a game-high 21 points. R.L Horton had 14, and Sai'Quon Stone dropped in 10. Andre Stephens added eight rebounds. The Golden Eagles were down 40-15 at the half, tying their lowest first half output of the season. Southern Miss battled throughout the second half, but could not get any closer than 14 points. For the game Southern Miss shot 31.8% (21-of-66), while the Golden Hurricane shot 59.2% (29-of-49).
East Carolina enters today's game with an 8-14 record, 2-7 in conference play, and has lost six of its last seven games. The Pirates are led by guard Sam Hinnant. The junior leads the team with 10.8 points per game. Sophomore forward John Fields is averaging 9.0 points while placing second with 5.0 rebounds. ECU is coming off a 66-61 defeat against Tulsa. James Legan led the Pirates with 18 points. Fields had 15 points and six rebounds, while Blair added 10 points. Darrell Jenkins added seven assists.
Southern Miss returns to Hattiesburg on Wednesday, February 20. The Golden Eagles will host the SMU Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. (CT) at Reed Green Coliseum.
