Eagles Lose At South Florida, 68-60

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Golden Eagles had trouble stopping South Florida's guards and the 43 points scored by the Bulls' starting guards was too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome, as USF posted a 68-60 Conference USA decision in the Sun Dome here Friday night.

Head Coach James Green's team enjoyed a couple of early-game leads, but the Bulls quickly caught up and led by as many as 11 points, before the Golden Eagles went on a quick 10-1 run to end the first half and close the deficit to just two points, 30-28.

Southern Miss kept the score close early in the second half and trailed only 39-36 with 13:42 left, following a Greg Johnson jumper. But, the Bulls then scored the next 12 points, over a 5:23 span, and the resulting 51-37 USF lead proved to be more than the Eagles could overcome. USM did managed to get to within six points, 65-59, but that came with just 35-seconds left.

South Florida managed to maintain the lead thanks to solid free throw shooting that saw the Bulls score their final 11 points of the game from the free throw line. South Florida finished with 18-of-34 from the line. Southern Miss made 12-of-21. Both teams made 22 field goals, and USF was 6-of-11 from 3-point range, Southern Miss 4-of-14.

USF guard Bradley Mosley led all scorers with 30 points and fellow guard Brian Swift added 13 for a Bulls team that used the victory to snap a nine-game losing streak.

Charles Gaines led the Eagles with 20 points and collected his 11th double-double of the season, and 25th of his Southern Miss career, with a game-high 12 rebounds. Jasper Johnson added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Greg Johnson had 11 points. Southern Miss shot just .386 (22-57) from the field, South Florida .478 (22-46). The Golden Eagles won the rebounding battle with a solid 40-33 edge.

Following the USF game, the Eagles will play four of the final six games of the regular season in the friendly confines of Green Coliseum, starting with a Feb. 18, game against Houston. The Conference USA Tournament this year will be played in Cincinnati, Ohio, Mar. 10-13.
