Southern Miss Advances to the Semifinals
Neil Watson scored 23 points and Dwayne Davis scored 20 to lead second-seeded Southern Mississippi to an 81-66 victory over UAB on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament.
- The Southern Miss men's basketball team begins a two-game road trip this Thursday, February 13, when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and will be televised by CSS.
Southern Miss and UAB will meet for the 42nd time. The Blazers lead the series, 24-17. When played in Birmingham, UAB leads, 14-5. However, the Golden Eagles have won three straight in the series and six of the last eight.
Southern Miss enters today's game with a 21-3 record and 8-1 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles have won seven straight after defeating Charlotte, 81-64, Sunday afternoon.
Senior guard Neil Watson leads the team with 11.7 points. He leads Conference USA and is second in the country (as of Feb. 9) in free throw percentage, connecting on 93.7-percent from the charity stripe. He is also sixth in the league in steals (1.6) and eighth in assists (4.0). Senior forward Michael Craig is adding 11.5 points and a team-high 8.0 boards, which is seventh in C-USA. He is also fourth in the league in field goal percentage, connecting on 59.1-percent from the floor.
Senior forward Daveon Boardingham is averaging 10.7 points per game and is pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game. He is also connecting on 57.9-percent from the field, which is sixth in C-USA. Senior guard Jerrold Brooks is scoring 10.0 points and junior forward Aaron Brown is averaging 9.1 points.
Southern Miss is averaging 73.3 points per game and is leading C-USA by allowing just 61.6. The Golden Eagles are connecting on a league-best 46.8% from the field and 34.7% from three while allowing just 41.9% from the floor and 34.0% from behind the arc. Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 35.9-to-28.4, a rebound margin of +7.5, which is 13th in the NCAA (as of Feb. 9). The Black and Gold is second in the league and 13th in the country (as of Feb. 9) with 8.7 steals per game.
UAB enters tonight's game with a 14-9 record and 3-6 in Conference USA. The Blazers have lost three straight and five of seven after falling, 82-71, Saturday night at Florida Atlantic.
Junior guard Chad Frazier is third in Conference USA with 18.1 points. He is also third in minutes played (35.8), fifth in three-pointer made (2.1) and sixth in assists (4.2). Junior forward C.J. Washington is averaging 14.0 points. He is also tenth in the league in rebounding (7.4). Senior forward Rod Rucker is adding 11.1 points.
UAB is scoring 75.1 points while allowing 71.7. The Blazers are connecting on just 42.1-percent from the floor and 29.8-percent from three. They are allowing 41.0-percent from the field and 31.7-percent from three. UAB is also out-rebounding its opponents, 45.7-to-36.2, a rebound margin of 9.6, which is tops in the conference.
Head coach Jerrod Haase is in his second year as the head of the UAB program, where he has a 30-26 (.536) record.
