Men's Basketball Tries To Snap Three-Game Losing Streak

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Currently in the midst of the first three-game losing streak of the season and following a

64-52 home loss to Cincinnati, the Golden Eagles hit the road for a two-game trip that has Head Coach James Green's

team playing at Houston (Feb. 14) and at Saint Louis (Feb. 17).

The six-day trip marks the final two road games of the regular season for the Eagles, who will close the 2000-2001

regular season with home games against Tulane (Feb. 24), Memphis (Feb. 28) and South Florida (Mar. 3).

The Southern Miss-Houston series is one of relatively recent origin. The two teams first played in 1968, and the Golden

Eagles hold a slim 8-6 edge after winning the earlier game between the two teams this season, 72-51. In that game, the

Eagles jumped ahead, 42-20, at the half and cruised to the victory. Twelve different players scored in that game for the

Eagles with David Wall leading the way with 18, and Mario Myles adding 12.

The Golden Eagles take a three-game losing streak into the game after losing at home to UAB and Cincinnati and to

Tulane on the road. Those losses dropped Southern Miss to 16-7 overall and 6-5 in league play. Houston is fresh from

90-78 loss at DePaul and enters the game at 5-16 overall and 2-7 in Conference USA play.

David Wall continues to lead the Eagles in scoring at 14.4 points a game, and teammates Vandarel Jones and Elvin

Mims add 11.7 and 10.8 points respectively. Jones also tops the rebounders at 7.3 a game. The Eagles continue to hold

a healthy lead in scoring margin (70.3-61.4), to lead in the rebounding department (36.7-33.3), to shoot better from the

floor (.435-.405), from three-point range (.355-.293) and from the free throw line (.671-.653.)

The Cougars have four players in double figures, led by Dominic Smith's 13.5 points a game. The Cougars are

averaging 65.0 points a game while giving up 67.0

Following the game at Houston, the Eagles will move on to St. Louis, Mo., where they will play the Billikens Feb. 17 in

the final regular season road game of the season. Southern Miss then returns home to end the regular season against

Tulane (Feb. 24), Memphis (Feb. 28) and South Florida (Mar. 3).

The OCG Conference USA Tournament is scheduled for Mar. 7-10 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. Tickets to that

event remain on sale through the Southern Miss ticket office located in the Ferlise Ticket Center or by calling

601/266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK.
