Men's Basketball Begins Two-Game Road Trip at Tulsa
Golden Eagles face Golden Hurricanes Saturday at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
Southern Miss and Tulsa will face each other for the sixth time in a series that dates back to 1956. The Golden Eagles lead the series, 3-2, and have won the last two meetings. In games played in Tulsa, the Golden Hurricanes hold a 2-1 advantage. Last year, Southern Miss defeated Tulsa, 70-65, in Hattiesburg.
Southern Miss (12-10, 4-4 C-USA) is led by guard Jeremy Wise. The sophomore leads the team in scoring with 18.7 points per game. Right behind him is freshman R.L. Horton with 12.3, junior Courtney Beasley with 11.6 and sophomore Sai'Quon Stone at 8.2. Gjio Bain leads Southern Miss on the boards, pulling down 6.2 rebounds a game.
Southern Miss is coming off a 93-85 double-overtime victory over UAB on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 14 in the first half, and 12 at halftime. Craig Craft scored a career-high 27 points and Jeremy Wise added 19. The Golden Eagle scoring output in the contest was their most ever in a Conference USA game, breaking the previous high of 92 points that they set twice, including their last game against East Carolina. Andre Stephens added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Sai'Quon Stone and Courtney Beasley pitched in 11 points.
Tulsa enters today's game with a 10-10 record, 2-7 in conference play, and has lost six of its last eight games. The Golden Hurricanes are led by guard Ben Uzoh. The sophomore leads the team with 14.7 points per game while placing second with 6.1 rebounds. Freshman guard Glenn Andrews is averaging 10.7 points and 2.1 rebounds. Senior forward Calvin Walls leads the team with 8.3 rebounds.
Tulsa is coming off a 91-82 defeat at Houston. Uzoh led the Golden Hurricanes with 17 points and five assists. Walls had 13 points and Ray Reese had 12. Andrews and Justin Hurtt added 11 and 10, respectively.
Southern Miss will have a week off before closing out its two-game road trip next Saturday. The Golden Eagles travel to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina on February 16. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. (CT) at Minges Coliseum.
