Southern Miss-East Carolina Game Notes
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team closes out a two-game road trip this Wednesday when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
Southern Miss and East Carolina will meet for the 12th time, with the Pirates holding a 6-5 advantage. In Greenville, ECU holds a 4-2 record. However, Southern Miss has won the last five games by an average of 20.0 points. Last year, Southern Miss won the season-series, earning a 92-69 victory in Hattiesburg before defeating East Carolina, 72-62, in Greenville.
Southern Miss enters Wednesday night's game with a 13-7 record, 3-3 in C-USA. The Golden Eagles saw their two-game winning streak end when they fell at UTEP, 87-75.
Southern Miss had four players in double-figures, led by Courtney Beasley with a career-high 30 points and 10 rebounds. It was Beasley's fourth double-double of the year and sixth of his career. R.L Horton scored 17 points and Craig Craft and Jeremy Wise added 12 points. Wise also dished out nine assists.
Wise is ninth in the conference with 16.1 points per game, while also averaging 5.2 assists. Beasley is averaging 15.3 points and grabbing a team-high 6.7 rebounds, while R.L. Horton is adding 11.9 points and Craig Craft is contributing 11.6 points and 5.3 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles are averaging 68.9 points per game, while allowing 63.7. Southern Miss is hitting 72.3-percent of their free throws and grabbing 35.8 rebounds.
East Carolina enters tonight's game with a 10-10 record, 2-5 in conference. The Pirates have lost two straight and nine of their last 11 games. ECU is coming off a 76-70 defeat at Rice.
Sophomore center Chad Wynn led East Carolina with 21 points. Senior guard Sam Hinnant scored 17 points and sophomore guard Brock Young added 11.
Hinnant leads ECU with 15.3 points. Senior guard James Legan is averaging 12.6 points, and Young is scoring 10.9 points and a team-leading 8.0 assists. Freshman forward Darius Morrow is scoring 9.9 points and pulling down a team-high 7.3 rebounds.
As a team, the Pirates are shooting 44.3-percent while allowing its opponents to shoot 44.1-percent from the field. East Carolina is scoring 73.8 points per game while allowing 72.8.
Head Coach Mack McCarthy is in his second season at the helm of the East Carolina men's basketball program. He has compiled a 21-29 (.420) record during his tenure as head coach. In 18 years, McCarthy has a 330-206 (.616) record.
Southern Miss returns home this Saturday, Feb. 7. The Golden Eagles will host UAB in a regionally-televised game on CSS. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. CT.
