Eagles Hit The Road For Two Games
Hattiesburg, Miss. - After dropping a pair of home games, to Tulane and Memphis and sporting a 6-9 record, Southern Miss hits the road for a two-game trip that will last almost a week. The Eagles play at Houston Jan. 23, spend an extra day on the road, and then end the trip with a Jan. 26 game at TCU.

The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 73-64 home-court loss to Memphis, while Houston brings a three-game win streak and a solid 10-7 record into the game. The Cougars beat UAB in Birmingham, Ala., over the weekend, 80-71.

Houston averages 74.6 points a game and shows five players in double figures, with center Patrick Okafor leading the way at 13.8 points and 6.7 rebounds a game.

Elvin Mims continues to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring. He's now at 19.2 points a game, after turning in his second highest scoring game of the season with 29 off the bench against Memphis. That average currently is the fifth best scoring average in Conference USA. Mims has been in double figures in 12 of the 13 games in which he has played. He has a season-best of 33 points and has six, 20-point-plus games.

Clement Carter is the only other Southern Miss player in double figures. He's at 10.7 points a game.

Southern Miss leads the series with Houston 9-6, and has won nine of the last 10 games the two teams have played, including both games last season, 62-58 in Houston, and 72-51 in Hattiesburg.

Following the game with the Cougars, the Eagles will spend an extra day in Houston, bus to Ft. Worth, Texas, play the Horned Frogs Saturday night at 7:05, and return home the following day.

Following the two-game road trip, the Eagles return home for a Jan. 29, game against Saint Louis. Tickets to that game, as well as all remaining home games, are on sale at the athletic ticket office located on West Fourth Street, or by calling 601/266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK.
