Southern Miss Hosts Houston in C-USA Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team seeks its first home win in conference play when hosts Houston Saturday, January 17, at 4 p.m. CT.

Southern Miss enters Saturday afternoon's game with a 10-5 record, 1-1 in C-USA. Southern Miss and Houston will meet for the 28th time, with the Cougars holding a 15-12 advantage. However, in games played in Hattiesburg, the Golden Eagles lead 7-3. Last year, UH defeated Southern Miss, 95-67, in Houston.

The Golden Eagles picked up their first conference victory Wednesday, defeating Tulane, 61-54. Jeremy Wise led the Golden Eagles with 20 points, including 14 in the second half. Courtney Beasley and R.L. Horton added 12 points. Wise also grabbed seven rebounds.

Wise is seventh in the conference with 17.8 points per game, while also averaging 4.7 assists. Beasley is averaging 12.9 points and grabbing a team-high 6.5 rebounds, while R.L. Horton is adding 12.0 points.

The Golden Eagles are averaging 67.1 points per game, while allowing 59.9. Southern Miss is hitting 73.1-percent of their free throws, which is tops in Conference USA, and grabbing 37.0 rebounds.

Houston enters tonight's game with an 11-3 record, 2-0 in C-USA after defeating UTEP, 94-86, Wednesday night.

Junior guard Kelvin Lewis leads Houston with 19.3 points. Junior guard Aubrey Coleman is second on the team with 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. Senior center Marcus Cousins adds 12.3 points and a team-high 9.4 boards, and junior forward Qa'rraan Calhoun contributes 11.6 points.

As a team, UH is shooting 44.0-percent while holding its opponents to 38.3-percent. The Cougars are scoring 78.9 points per game while allowing just 64.0.

Head Coach Tom Penders is in his third season at the helm of the Houston men's basketball program. He has compiled a 92-52 (.639) record during his tenure as head coach. Penders has a 619-413 (.600) overall record in 35 seasons as a head coach.

The Golden Eagles return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Orlando, Fla., to face UCF. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. CT.
