Golden Eagles Begin Two-Game Road Trip at UTEP

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team returns to conference play when it begins a two-game road trip at UTEP on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m. CT.

Southern Miss and UTEP will meet for the 14th time, with the Miners holding a 9-4 advantage. In El Paso, UTEP owns a 6-1 record. Last year, the Miners swept the season series, winning 87-75, in El Paso and 81-70 in Hattiesburg.

Southern Miss enters Saturday night's game with a 10-6 record after snapping a three-game losing streak by defeating Cal-State Bakersfield, 81-65.

Juniors R.L. Horton and Gary Flowers and sophomore Angelo Johnson all had 13 points for the Golden Eagles. Horton added a season-high eight rebounds and four assists, and Johnson dished out a career-high seven assists.

Flowers currently leads the team with 14.1 points. He is tenth in Conference USA in field goal percentage, connecting on 50.3-percent of his shots, fifth in rebounding with 8.0 boards per game and fourth in blocks (1.9).

Bolden is second on the team with 11.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. He is also third in the league in free throw percentage, hitting 82.8-percent from the line. Sophomore guard Angelo Johnson is scoring 9.5 points, while junior guard R.L. Horton is also contributing 9.1 points.

As a team, Southern Miss is scoring 69.5 points per game, while allowing 62.8. The Golden Eagles are third in the conference in rebounding, pulling down 39.9 boards per game, while giving up just 31.9 to the opposition. The Black and Gold are connecting on 43.8-percent of their shots, while their opponents are hitting just 39.6-percent.

Head coach Larry Eustachy is in his sixth season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled an 85-86 (.497) record during his time as head coach. In 18 years, Eustachy has an overall record of 345-231 (.599).

Cal-State Bakersfield enters Tuesday night's contest with a 2-13 record. The Roadrunners are coming off an 82-81 defeat at the hands of Longwood.

UTEP enters Saturday night's contest with a 10-5 record. They are 1-1 in conference and have lost their last two games after falling at Houston, 75-65, on Wednesday night.

Sophomore forward Arnett Moultrie led the Miners with 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior guard Julyan Stone scored 13 points and had a game-high six assists, while junior forward Derrick Caracter added 10 points.

Junior guard Randy Culpepper is fourth in Conference USA with 17.0 points. Caracter is second on the team with 13.9 points, while grabbing a team-high 8.3 rebounds. Moultrie is scoring 12.3 points and is second on the team with 7.1 boards. Junior guard Christian Polk is also scoring 10.9 points.

As a team, the Miners are averaging 78.1 points per game, third most in the conference, while allowing 65.8. UTEP is grabbing 36.7 rebounds per game, while giving up 35.3. UTEP is connecting on 46.6-percent of its shots, also third in C-USA, while allowing the opposition to score 39.8-percent of the time. Head coach Tony Barbee is in his fourth season leading the UTEP men's basketball program. He currently holds a 66-50 (.569) record.
