Southern Miss-Cal-State Bakersfield Game Notes
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team will step out of conference to host Cal-State Bakersfield in its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Southern Miss enters Tuesday night's game with a 9-6 record after dropping a 59-57decision to Memphis last Saturday. It was the Golden Eagles third straight loss and fifth defeat in their last six games.
Sophomore guard Maurice Bolden had a team-high 13 points and five rebounds. Junior guard R.L. Horton scored 12 points. Forwards junior Gary Flowers and senior Andre Stephens had a game-high seven rebounds apiece.
Flowers currently leads the team with 14.2 points. He is tenth in Conference USA in field goal percentage, connecting on 50.3-percent of his shots, fifth in rebounding with 8.3 boards per game and fourth in blocks (2.0).
Bolden is second on the team with 12.3 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. He is also fourth in the league in free throw percentage, hitting 82.8-percent from the line. Sophomore guard Angelo Johnson is scoring 9.3 points, while junior guard R.L. Horton is also contributing 8.9 points.
As a team, Southern Miss is scoring 68.7 points per game, while allowing 62.7. The Golden Eagles are third in the conference in rebounding, pulling down 40.1 boards per game, while giving up just 31.9 to the opposition. The Black and Gold are connecting on 43.3-percent of their shots, while their opponents are hitting just 39.5-percent.
Head coach Larry Eustachy is in his sixth season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. He has compiled an 84-86 (.494) record during his time as head coach. In 18 years, Eustachy has an overall record of 344-231 (.598).
Cal-State Bakersfield enters Tuesday night's contest with a 2-13 record. The Roadrunners are coming off an 82-81 defeat at the hands of Longwood.
Senior forward Santwon Latunde led CSUB with a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Trent Blakley scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman guard Stephon Carter added nine points and nine rebounds.
Blakley leads Cal-State Bakersfield with 15.5 points and is second with 4.5 rebounds. Carter is second on the team with 11.7 points, while grabbing 4.1 boards. Latunde is contributing 10.5 points and a team-high 9.1 rebounds.
As a team, the Roadrunners are averaging 66.0 points per game, while allowing 77.3. CSUB is grabbing 37.6 rebounds per game, while giving up 39.3. Cal-State Bakersfield is connecting on just 36.9-percent of its shots, while allowing the opposition to score 46.3-percent of the time.
Head coach Keith Brown is in his fifth season leading the Cal-State Bakersfield men's basketball program. He currently holds a 54-77 (.412) record. In ten seasons as a head coach, Brown is 95-185 (.339).
