Men's Hoops Closes Non-Conference Play against Dillard

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's basketball team will close out its non-conference schedule this Thursday, Jan. 3, when it hosts Dillard. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

Southern Miss Dominates Dillard, 87-55
Maurice Bolden scored 18 points and was one of 11 players to score for Southern Miss in an 87-55 win over Dillard on Wednesday night.

The Black and Gold are currently on a 19-game home winning streak, the fifth-longest in the country. Southern Miss has also won its last 27 non-conference home games, the second longest streak in school history.

Southern Miss and Dillard will meet for just the second time in history and the first time since 2009. The Golden Eagles won the only other meeting, 87-55, at Reed Green Coliseum.

Southern Miss comes into today's game with a 10-4 record. The Golden Eagles have won four of their last five games after defeating William Carey, 89-59, Monday afternoon.

Senior guard Jonathan Mills led Southern Miss with season-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the year and the sixth of his career. Junior guard Cedric Jenkins scored a career-high 17 points and junior guard Neil Watson added 12 points, six assists and a school record tying eight steals.

Senior guard Dwayne Davis is leading the team with 12.9 points while pulling down 4.5 rebounds. He is also sixth in Conference USA in free throw percentage, connecting on 84.4-pecent from the charity stripe. Junior guard Jerrold Brooks is second on the team with 10.2 points. Junior forward Michael Craig is adding 9.8 points and 5.7 rebounds. He is also connecting on 54.5-percent from the floor, which is fifth in the league. Jonathan Mills is scoring 9.3 points and grabbing a team-high 6.8 boards a game.

Southern Miss is scoring 68.6 points per game but allowing just 59.1 which is second Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are shooting 46.4-percent from the floor and allowing its opponents to just 38.8-percent, which is third and second in the league, respectively. The Golden Eagles are connecting on 34.4-percent from three-point range, but allowing just 29.3% from the same distance, tops in C-USA. Southern Miss is also outrebounding its opponents, 33.9-to-29.7. The Golden Eagles are also leading the league and are fourth in the country in steals with 11.2.

Head coach Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at the helm of the Southern Miss men's basketball program. Tyndall is 10-4 (.714) as head coach of the Golden Eagles. He has compiled a 124-89 (.582) record in seven years as a head coach.

Dillard enters today's game with a 1-7 record. The Bleu Devils have not played since Dec. 17 when they lost their fifth straight game, 93-32, to Spring Hill on Dec. 17.

Freshman forward Jarrain Jenkins led Dillard with a game-high 16 points. Sophomore guard Roland Szabo added a team-high five rebounds.

Freshman guard Jaquan Green leads in the Bleu Devils with 15.6 points per game and is second with 4.7 rebounds. Jenkins is scoring 15.3 points and leads the team with 5.4 boards per game. Freshman forward Tyrone Williams is also averaging 10.1 points.

As a team, Dillard is scoring 62.1 points per game while allowing 88.9. DU is connecting on just 40.4% from the field, while the opposition is connecting on 51.3%. From three-point distance, the Bleu Devils are connecting on 29.3%, but are allowing 40.3%. Dillard is also being outrebounded, 40.8-to-32.0.

Head coach Bernard Griffith is in his second season at the helm of the Dillard men's basketball program. Griffith is 2-32 (.059) as head coach of the Bleu Devils.
