Southern Miss Quotes

Head Coach Larry Eustachy

Opening Statement: "This is the most devastating loss that I've ever been involved with, particularly at home. I hold myself accountable and responsible for the loss."

On UAB: "They are really good. They are an NCAA Tournament team, and we're not nearly there as a team. I thought we could have been in this game and could have played with them, but we obviously didn't."

Travis Hall

On how they played against UAB: "We didn't do our job tonight and it hurt us in a big way. They were able to knock down all of the big shots. We didn't execute on either end of the ball, and that's the story of the game."

On how UAB's press defense affected their style of play: "We have a scheme against their type of press, but it isn't easy to play against a press like that when they do it on every possession. The game of basketball is about hard work and being determined, and they were the more determined team today."

David Cornwell

On the team's defense against UAB: "I try to take what Coach Eustachy has taught us, which is that playing defense is the only way that you'll be able to get back in a game. I think that you win games not from your offense, but from your defense. I feel that if we would have contained them, defensively, that we would have scored enough points to have won the game."

On how well UAB shot the ball: "They did shoot the ball well, but a lot of that came from us not playing hard. When you play hard, it's hard for them to catch the ball, and it's hard for them to get a shot off with a hand in their face. A lot of times in this game, we didn't contest them hard enough and we were late on their catches which gave them a lot of good looks on their shots."

UAB Quotes

Head Coach Mike Anderson

Opening Statement: "When you've been in the business this long, you never know what to expect from game to game. But I thought that our guys came in with a focused mindset which was especially focused on playing defense. We played Southern Miss earlier in the year, and one thing about them was that they wouldn't go away, which is a tribute to Coach Eustachy. For the game, we shot the ball well and our defense was solid for 40 minutes."

On how they planned for this game: "Playing defense was the focus of our basketball team. Our defense allowed us to create some opportunities for us on the offensive side. Overall, we were very patient with our defense. We've led the NCAA in steals for the past three seasons, but you have to have balance and I think we're starting to finally have the balance that I've been talking about."

Marvett McDonald

On having a large lead throughout the game: "Once we have a lead, we try to continue to build it and hang onto the lead until the game is over. The difference between this game and the first game against Southern Miss earlier in the year, was that we had a large lead in that first game as well, but they came back in the second half."

On how they view each game: "We view each game as a big game, taking no team for granted. We played them just as hard as Duke or anyone else."
