Southern Miss senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce was named a Collegiate Baseball preseason third-team All-American by the publication this week.
A native of Stringer, Miss., and the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in 2012, Pierce posted a 7-4 record with a 1.99 earned run average last season in his first season with the Golden Eagles. He made 15 appearances and had 14 starts in which he fanned 96 batters in 99 1/3 innings of work while walking just 16.
Pierce played his first two seasons on the collegiate level at Jones Junior College where he helped lead them to the NJCAA World Series in which they finished second in the tournament in 2011.
The Golden Eagles open their 2013 season, Fri., Feb. 15, when they entertain Southeastern Conference newcomer Missouri in the first of a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
