Baseball Adds Two More Signees for 2014 Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry announced the addition of two more players to the 2014 signing class here Thursday, with the signing of right-handed pitchers Cooper Jones (Pensacola, Fla.) and Ryan Milton (Albany, La.).
"You can never have enough quality pitching in your program and we are happy to sign two more right-handers who should be assets for us both on and off the field over the next few years," said Berry. "Our assistant coaches, Chad Caillet and Michael Federico, continue to work hard in bringing in not only top-quality baseball talent, but also young men who will represent our program off the field in positive ways as well."
Milton, at 6-foot-4, 210 lbs., will play his final year at Jones County Junior College this spring, after posting a 6-4 mark last season with a 2.26 ERA. He pitched 51 2/3 innings, allowed just 42 hits and recorded 61 strikeouts.
Prior to his time at JCJC, Milton prepped at Albany High School where he was a three-time first-team District 9-3A selection and two-time all-parish pick The four-year letterwinner posted a 9-2 record with a 1.29 ERA and struck out 134 batters as a senior. He originally signed with Southeastern Louisiana out of high school, before transferring to junior college.
Jones, 6-foot-3, 170 lbs., posted an 8-0 record with a 1.14 earned run average in 12 appearances (11 starts) last season for Pensacola Catholic High School. In 55 1/3 innings, he allowed just 10 runs (nine earned) on 37 hits with 28 walks and 58 strikeouts while opponents hit just .185 off of him.
His school went 27-3 last season leading his team to the FHSAA Class 4A state championship last spring.
The Golden Eagles opened the early signing period on Wednesday by inking infielder/outfielder Dylan Burdeaux (West Monroe, La./West Monroe HS), along with right-handed pitchers Dustin Berrong (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla./Choctawhatchee HS) and Christian Talley (Diamondhead, Miss./Pearl River CC).
