Redshirt freshman Michael Sterling had two hits and drove in four runs to lead the Gold past the Black squad 7-2 here Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Sterling was one of five Gold players to record a pair of hits as Connor Barron, Bradley Roney, Andrew Furr and Brock Hunt led the way for the team. The Gold squad ended the day with 13 hits.
Ashley Graeter paced the Black squad with a 4-for-4 day as they collected seven hits.
After three scoreless frames, Sterling put the visitors on top for good with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Black reliever Taylor Nunez then issued four walks to start the fifth which led to one before Hunt delivered an RBI single. Sterling then drove home a run on a single before the final run was plated on a fielding error by Graeter at shortstop.
The Black cut the margin with its lone runs in the seventh. James McMahon drove in the first tally with an RBI single and Chase Fowler knocked home the other score on an infield groundout.
Sterling completed the Gold's scoring in the eighth with a two-run single to center.
Josh Rogers pitched a scoreless inning in which he allowed a walk and a hit to go along with a strikeout to register the victory. Dillon Day surrendered the game's first run on two hits with two strikeouts to suffer the defeat.
The Golden Eagles will return to action this February when they open their 2012 schedule.
