Follow Golden Eagle senior Chase Fowler of Cumming, Ga., as he and his baseball teammates go through individual workouts and then fall practice as they work on their quest to get back to the NCAA Tournament. Chase will write share his thoughts on Southern Miss baseball and other happenings each Thursday during the fall semester.
The Southern Miss family is very special to me and to this team. I can't explain how good it feels to walk out to The Pete on a Friday night in the spring and see the stands packed with Black and Gold. As athletes, we feed off of the fans' energy. Hattiesburg is a tough place to play when you, the fans, come out to cheer us on and heckle the opponents.
I'll be the first to admit that baseball is a tough sport to watch, especially last year when we were losing. Playing in front of 3,000 fans is so much easier than playing in front of 100. As a player, we get goose bumps when we see that many people in the stands and it gives us an energy that only the fans can provide.
This season will be different than last year. This team is a fun group to watch. This time last year, we had no clue what we were doing and had absolutely zero chemistry. It is only the second week of team practice and it feels like we have been playing with each other for a year.
So with that said, I am asking you a favor. Come out to The Pete this Saturday for our weekend scrimmage at 11 a.m. The new guys need to feel the energy of the fans. They already got a taste of it on Sunday when we had a few of y'all in the stands. If you are coming to the football game Saturday night, come a few hours earlier and head over to The Pete for some Golden Eagle baseball. I would appreciate the support and I know my teammates will feel the same!
