HATTIESBURG, Miss. - University of Southern Mississippi head baseball coach Corky Palmer announced today the addition of high school infielder Travis Creel and junior college left-handed pitcher Moses Munoz to complete the 2009 signing class.
"I think that we are bringing in some excellent players for the 2009 team with three players taken in June's draft and five junior college All-Americans," Palmer said. "We have some big bats and quality arms joining our program."
The latest additions include LHP Moses Munoz who was taken in the 33rd round (988 overall) by the Florida Marlins in last June's Major League Baseball Free Agent Draft. Munoz comes to the Golden Eagles from Bossier Parrish Community College however stats are unavailable since BPCC does not keep stats on their team.
He is a 6'1" left-handed pitcher with a very good curveball that should be a starting pitcher for the Golden Eagles next season.
"Moses is another quality arm that adds another very good pitcher to the staff," Palmer said. "We feel fortunate to find a good pitcher this late in the summer, but had to find someone to replace Chad Poe who elected to turn professional."
Also joining the Golden Eagles 2009 team as a freshman will be Travis Creel from Ocean Springs High School where he played shortstop for the Mississippi State 5A Champion Greyhounds.
In his senior campaign he hit .325 with seven home runs and 38 RBI while anchoring the defense with only five errors committed all season. He was a first team All-State and All-South selection who participated in the north/south all-star game.
"Travis really wanted to be a Golden Eagle, he had the option to go play at a junior college but his heart was at Southern Miss and he wanted to get in here young and learn the way we do things," Palmer said. "He is a good athlete that has really played well this summer and should help us in the future in the middle infield."
With the addition of Munoz and Creel the Golden Eagles have completed their 2009 signing class. 15 new players will join Southern Miss in 2009 including three players taken in last years draft, five junior college All-Americans, seven all-state players, five all-region players, three all-conference players and one national defensive player of the year.
