Gabe Montenegro Named Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss outfielder Gabe Montenegro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) earned Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball Wednesday morning in a release by the news outlet.
Montenegro appeared in 59 games for the Golden Eagles, including 54 starts, and batted .295 with 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 38 RBI. He added a .393 on-base percentage, stole four bases and committed just two errors in 95 fielding chances for a .979 fielding percentage.
The Golden Eagle left fielder hit in the leadoff spot for most of the season as he scored 49 runs. Montenegro also garnered a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team as he helped Southern Miss to a 44-18 season to go along with the league regular-season and tournament crowns.
Montenegro collected a season-high four hits at UAB (May 5) and four RBI versus Southern (March 20), while belting one of his two home runs in the C-USA championship game against Florida Atlantic.
It is the fourth consecutive year Southern Miss has enjoyed a pick on this squad with the others being Taylor Braley (2015), Nick Sandlin (2016) and Matt Wallner (2017). He also is the 19th Golden Eagle to be named to this team since the 1992 campaign.
