June 6, 2012
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss baseball players Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) and Bradley Roney (Wetumpka, Ala.) were named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America Team, selected by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper and announced Wednesday morning.
Robbins, a 6-2, 196 lb., left-handed pitcher/outfielder, was named to the team at Multiple Position Athlete. The Conference USA Freshman of The Year hit .330 with 11 doubles, 5 triples, 3 homers and 38 RBI. He started the season with an 18-game hitting streak and led the squad in multiple-hit games with 22 and added 10 multi-RBI contests.
He also emerged into the squad's Sunday starter in league play and posted a 1-0 with a 4.01 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 33 2/3 innings.
Roney, the 6-1, 190 lb., infielder/right-handed pitcher was chosen at Relief Pitcher after posting the most-ever saves for a freshman for a Golden Eagle. He ended the year with a 2-1 record and a 2.42 ERA. He fanned 26 in 26 innings of work and opponents hit just .200 off of him during the campaign.
Offensively, Roney batted .227 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 44 at bats in a limited role at third base for the program.
This is the second-straight year the program has had a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American as catcher Jared Bales picked up the honor last season.
