HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 10 Southern Miss opens its first home regional for the first time in 14 years Friday and the Golden Eagles enjoy their first No. 1 seed in their NCAA Tournament history as they play host to UIC at Pete Taylor Park.
Game time is set for 1 p.m., for the top-seeded Golden Eagles (48-14), who take on fourth-seeded UIC (39-15), who won the Horizon League this season. No. 2-seed Mississippi State (36-24) takes on No. 3-seed South Alabama (39-19) at 6 p.m. All the games of the Hattiesburg Regional can be seen on ESPN 3.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools as both teams plan to throw their respective aces. Junior left-hander Kirk McCarty goes for the Golden Eagles as he has posted a 10-2 record with a 2.96 earned run average with a team-best 96 strikeouts. He looks to become the first Southern Miss pitcher to reach at least 100 in a season since Shea Douglas registered 108 in 2002.
The Flames will counter with senior southpaw Jake Dahlberg, who has notched a 10-2 record with a 2.09 ERA.
Southern Miss enters the game having won 18 of its last 20 games, reaching the C-USA Baseball Championship title game and winning the regular season crown by six games.
Led by Collegiate Baseball All-American Dylan Burdeaux, the Golden Eagles have eight players hitting above .300 on the season. The squad also has belted 85 home runs this season, the fifth most in school history.
The Golden Eagles first hosted a regional in 2003 as a No. 2 seed. That squad fell to top-seeded Baylor in the championship round.
The NCAA Tournament appearances for the Golden Eagles is their 14th and their second trip to the postseason in as many years.
Should the Golden Eagles defeat UIC, they would advance to a 6 pm., winner’s bracket, or a 1 p.m., contest should they lose on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles are a combined 3-0 against the Hattiesburg Regional field, defeating South Alabama twice and Mississippi State once this season.
