PEARL, Miss. -
The Southern Miss baseball team will conclude pool play in the 2012 Conference USA Championship presented by Trustmark Saturday night when they take on Rice. Game time is set for 7 p.m., at Trustmark Park.
A win for the Golden Eagles for the first time in six games at Trustmark Park, Thursday, against Houston 8-7 in 10 innings gives Southern Miss a 31-24 record for the campaign, but the squad was eliminated from advancing to the championship because of its 14-3 loss Wednesday to Memphis and the Tigers 3-2 triumph over Rice Thursday night.
Senior Ashley Graeter leads the Golden Eagles with a .341 batting average after going 5-for-8 in the tournament. Freshman Mason Robbins holds a .332 hitting mark as he has collected 10 doubles, five triples, three home runs and 37 runs batted in this season.
Redshirt freshman Michael Sterling has enjoyed a solid tournament, after collecting a career-high four hits against the Cougars.
The Golden Eagles are undecided about who they will throw in the contest against Rice, while the Owls will counter with senior righthander Matthew Reckling, the league's Pitcher of the Year, who had posted an 8-2 record with a 2.85 earned run average.
The other games for the final day of pool play include Tulane against UCF at 11 a.m., and East Carolina versus UAB at 3 p.m.
