HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss defense of the Conference USA Baseball tournament crown begins Wednesday afternoon at MGM Park in Biloxi, when they take on UTSA at 4 p.m.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, as well as steamed on ESPN 3 (See link above for the ESPN 3 feed).
The Golden Eagles finished the regular season at 44-12 and enjoys the No. 1 seed in the tournament for just the second time in their history -- the other time in 2003. Southern Miss enters the event with a school-record 14-game winning streak after winning their fourth C-USA regular season crown and their victory total is the most ever for a regular season.
The No. 1 seed is courtesy of a 25-5 C-USA record that was six games better than second-place Old Dominion and included a 12-game winning streak to end the league season as well as a 14-1 conference road record. UTSA, the No. 8 seed, is 28-26.
Southern Miss went undefeated in last year's event at Pete Taylor Park, defeating Rice 3-2 in the championship game.
This season, Scott Berry's club, which just finished a three-game sweep of UTSA last weekend in the Alamo City, now plays the Roadrunners for the fourth-straight game after outscoring them 39-13 in the set. They have now won seven-straight contests in the overall series.
The Golden Eagles look to first-team All-Conference USA right-hander Colt Smith to lead the team on the mound as he has posted a 6-0 record with a 3.61 ERA, which includes a victory in all three of his starts this season. The Roadrunners will counter with junior left-hander Steven Dressler (3-4, 4.20 ERA). Smith outdueled Dressler in San Antonio last Thursday in a 9-3 Golden Eagle victory.
In the other side of the Golden Eagles' bracket, No. 4 Charlotte and No. 5 Louisiana Tech play at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will play one of those two teams Thursday at either 12:30 p.m., should they lose to UTSA in the opener and 7:30 p.m., if they win.
