May 23, 2016

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Two Southern Miss pitchers, senior Nick Johnson and sophomore Kirk McCarty, earned a spot on the 2016 Conference USA All-Academic Team announced Monday afternoon.

The 12-member squad encompassed nine different schools and were selected by the media relations contacts at each of the 12 baseball schools. In order to be eligible for the recognition, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore academic standing and be a starter or key reserve for their team. Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and WKU led the way, each with a pair of All-Academic team members.

He achieved the President's List five times, Dean's List and the AD's Honor Roll twice, collected five C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades and the league's Academic Medal three times. Johnson has appeared in 16 games with eight starts, posting a 2-1 record to go along with two saves.

McCarty, a left-hander from Hattiesburg, Miss., worked to make the President's List (4.00 GPA) in all three semesters at Southern Miss and he earned the C-USA Academic Medal and Commissioner's Honor Roll twice each. McCarty has posted a 6-1 record for the Golden Eagles and the team has won 13 of the 14 games he has started in this season, owning a 3.27. He also leads team in strikeouts with 82.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they open play in the 2016 Conference USA Baseball Championship, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, Wednesday at 4 p.m., against Old Dominion at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The Golden Eagles (36-18) are the No. 3 seed in the event while the Monarchs (32-22) are the No. 6 seed.
