After enjoying its day off in the Conference USA tournament on Thursday, the Southern Miss baseball team returns to pod play Friday afternoon when they take on Houston in a 3 p.m., contest at Rice's Reckling Park.
The Golden Eagles (29-25) opened the tournament Wednesday with a 10-7 victory over Tulane. Senior Blake Brown had a big hand in the victory with a two-run homer in the seventh. The Semmes, Ala., native homered in his third straight game and for the fourth time in the last five contests as he now has 10 round-trippers for the season.
Southern Miss plays a Cougar squad which defeated East Carolina 9-4 Thursday afternoon in their opening pod game to improve to 36-20.
The Golden Eagles expect to give sophomore left-handed pitcher Jake Drehoff (Alpharetta, Ga.) the nod on the mound against the Cougars. Drehoff has posted a 4-5 mark with a 3.82 earned run average. The southpaw is off a solid eight-inning outing at UH last Saturday in which he collected a victory.
If recent history is any indication, Drehoff should expect a strong offensive showing from the Golden Eagles as the squad has posted double-digit hits in each of the last three games and in six of the last eight contests.
Senior second baseman Isaac Rodriguez continues his stellar hitting with a current team-best 20-game hitting streak. The Weston, Fla., native leads the team in batting average at .356 with a pair of homers and 29 runs batted in.
Golden Eagle senior catcher Chase Fowler (South Forsyth, Ga.) holds the second highest average at .337, while sophomore designated hitter Austin Roussel is at .330, while sophomore rightfielder Mason Robbins is at .316 with a team-high 38 RBI and senior centerfielder Dillon Day holds a .309 mark.
The game can be heard on one of the affiliates the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network and the audio can also be heard through Southern Miss All-Access. A video stream of the broadcast can be obtained through the C-USA Digital Network for an additional price.
Southern Miss finishes pod play Saturday with a 7 p.m., game against East Carolina.
