Three Southern Miss Players Earn First-Team Conference USA Honors

May 21, 2013

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss seniors Chase Fowler (Cumming, Ga.), Andrew Pierce (Stringer, Miss.) and Isaac Rodriguez (Weston, Fla.) earned selection to the Conference USA first team in an announcement by the league office on Tuesday. Sophomore Mason Robbins (Leakesville, Miss.) garnered second team honors.

In a vote by the league's nine head coaches, baseball sports information contacts and selected media members, the Golden Eagles had the most first-team selections with three.

It was Fowler's first selection as an all-conference performer at catcher, after posting a .333 batting average with nine doubles, a team-best three triples, a home run and 28 runs batted in. Defensively, Fowler has been the driving force behind the plate in which he has started in 49 games there. He has posted a .985 fielding percentage, allowed just three passed balls and thrown out 55 percent of his potential base stealers (22-of-40).

As for Pierce, this is second first-team honor on the strength of a 9-2 record and a 2.36 earned run average. Pierce collected 92 strikeouts during the regular season with only 18 walks in 103 innings of work with opponents hitting just .221 off of him this season. He needs just one victory to become the 11th Golden Eagle to win 10 games in a season. During his two-year USM career, the Golden Eagles are 16-2 when he strikeouts at least five batters in a game.

Rodriguez earns the distinction of being the only Southern Miss player to start and play at the same position in every game this season. The four-year Golden Eagle leads the team in hitting with a .356 batting to go along with a current 19-game hitting streak as he has hit safely in 42 of 53 games. Rodriguez has led the club in walks and been involved in 50 of a league-high 71 double plays this season. He has made just five errors at second base this season for a .985 fielding percentage.

After earning a spot on the All-Freshman team a year and the league's Freshman of the Year, Robbins posted a .319 batting average in 51 games for the Golden Eagles. He tallied 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs and has driven in a team-high 37 runs. He had a string of driving in a run in 11 of 12 games late during the season.

Southern Miss (28-25) returns to action, Wednesday, when they open play in the 2013 Conference USA Championship against Tulane (28-27). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
