HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Three Southern Miss baseball players earned All-Conference USA second-team honors, while one other Golden Eagle earned a spot on the league's All-Freshman team for their play during the 2014 regular season. The announcement was made by the league office here Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Matt Durst (Whitehouse, Texas) earned the second-team spot at designated hitter/utility, while senior right-hander Conor Fisk (Brown Deer, Wis.) collected the honor at starting pitcher and junior right-hander Bradley Roney (Wetumpka, Ala.) garnered the relief pitching spot. Outfielder Dylan Burdeaux (West Monroe, La.) earned the Golden Eagles' lone spot on the All-Freshman team.
Durst led the Golden Eagles in hitting through the regular season with a .282 batting average to go along with team highs of six home runs and 40 runs batted in. He has started as the team's designated hitter in 43 of 51 games that he has played in this season.
Fisk, who made 12 starts for the Golden Eagles this season, posted a 6-2 record with a 2.68 earned run average. His win total is the most for the squad in 2014, while he has tallied a team-high 80 strikeouts in 84 innings of work with just 22 walks.
As for Roney, the Golden Eagles' closer, he racked up a team-high 11 saves in 16 appearances and converted 11-of-12 save opportunities. The hard-throwing righty limited foes to a 0.91 ERA over 29 2/3 innings, while allowing just 14 hits and 13 walks, while fanning 32 and limiting opponents to a .143 batting average. He now has 29 saves in his USM career, just one behind school-leader Collin Cargill, who tallied 30 from 2008-2011.
Burdeaux posted a .259 batting average with three homers and 19 RBI in 47 games (46 starts) to earn one of the 12 spots on the All-Freshman team.
The Golden Eagles, 32-23, continue their push towards a postseason berth when they open the Conference USA Baseball Championship at Pete Taylor Park, starting Wednesday against East Carolina. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., and fans can purchase tickets by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting either the Pat Ferlise Ticket Center during normal business hours or the Pete Taylor Park Box Office beginning at 7 a.m., both Thursday and Friday.
Southern Miss is set to send junior right-hander Christian Talley, who has posted a 4-4 record with a 2.44 ERA this season in 12 starts. Talley has 69 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings, while walking just 13. The Pirates (32-24) look to counter with junior Reid Love, who has put together a 5-3 record with a 2.55 ERA.
In the series played earlier this year, the Golden Eagles took two of three games from the Pirates in a three-game series that went 33 innings in a span of 24 hours due to rain over that weekend. The series dates back to the 2002 campaign and Southern Miss holds a 25-20 advantage.
