HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team heads to Miami for its final league series of the year against FIU, in search of capturing its fourth Conference USA regular-season title.
The Golden Eagles (36-15 overall, 20-7 C-USA) play the Panthers (25-27, 12-15) in a pair of 5:30 p.m. CT contests on both Thursday and Friday, before completing the series in a 10 a.m. CT Saturday tilt. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
The program, which holds a half-game advantage over Rice, a full-game lead over Marshall and are a game and a half better than Florida Atlantic in the standings with three contests games to play, looks to capture its first C-USA regular-season crown since 2013 as the school also has won the title in 2003 and 2011. Southern Miss has also captured C-USA Tournament crowns in 2003 and 2010.
Southern Miss takes the league's best team batting average to South Florida as graduate transfer and centerfielder Jake Sandlin continues to pace the club in hitting with a .368 average. Senior first baseman Tim Lynch, who leads the squad in runs batted in with 51, follows Sandlin at .357, while junior rightfielder Dylan Burdeaux chases close behind at .340.
Senior shortstop Nick Dawson, who leads the team in doubles with 16, holds a .339 batting mark, while redshirt freshman Hunter Slater is hitting at .328 for the Southern Miss offense.
The Golden Eagle pitching staff continues to pitch well and have not surrendered a run over the last 16 innings of work and have lowered the team's earned run average to 4.20 on the season. Freshman and closer Nick Sandlin notched his 10th save of the campaign in last Sunday's affair against Louisiana Tech, holding the second most saves by a Golden Eagle freshman, trailing only Bradley Roney's 11 in 2012.
The team reached the 20-win mark in C-USA play for the first time since 2005 and have notched 20 or more wins in league plays four times since the league started in 1996.
Following the FIU series, the Golden Eagles play host to next week's Conference USA Tournament, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, from May 25-29. Tickets for the event can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, or by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office weekdays during normal business hours.
