HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Pierce has been named one of five finalists for the 2013 C Spire Ferris Trophy, given to the top collegiate baseball player in the state of Mississippi.
The award will be presented at a May 20 luncheon at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. A limited number of $35 tickets remain for the 11:15 luncheon. Call 601-982-8264 to order tickets.
The Stringer, Miss., native has compiled a 9-1 record with a 2.37 earned run average. He has fanned 84 batters over 95 innings and has only walked 18 and looks to become only the 11th USM pitcher to register 10 wins in a season.
In 2013, he has gone at least seven innings in 10 of 13 starts during the year and has 10 quality starts. The Golden Eagles are 16-1 in games during his career in which he fans at least five in a game and Pierce has two double-digit strikeout games this season, including a season-high 11 against Troy.
A C-USA Pitcher of the Week honoree once this season, Pierce has allowed one or fewer earned runs in seven start and has posted a 5-0 mark in seven conference starts in which his team has won in six of those games.
The other finalists include John Branstetter of Delta State, Hunter Renfroe of Mississippi State, and Stuart Turner and Bobby Wahl of Ole Miss.
All five finalists and their coaches will be present for the luncheon. The award is named for Mississippi baseball legend Boo Ferriss, who pitched at Mississippi State, coached at Delta State and is a Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer. Voters include the state's collegiate coaches and Major League scouts whose territory includes Mississippi.
