Baseball Stays Alive in C-USA Championship with 5-2 Win over LA Tech
Guidry's three-run home run in the second inning gave Southern Miss a lead it never would lose and as the top-seeded Golden Eagles shook off Wednesday's first-round loss with a 5-2 victory over fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech in an elimination game.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss baseball puts its first-place standing on the line this weekend when they entertain Louisiana Tech, who enters play this weekend in third place, in the final home Conference USA series for the Golden Eagles at Pete Taylor Park.
Game times are set for 6 p.m., Friday, at 2 p.m., Saturday and 1 p.m., Sunday. It will be Season Ticket Holders Appreciation Weekend with random prizes drawn for season ticket holders at each game.
The No. 13 ranked Golden Eagles enter their ninth C-USA series of the season with a 35-12 overall record as their 19-4 league record puts them not only 3 1/2 games ahead of the Bulldogs, but also second-place Florida Atlantic, who leads holds their spot by mere percentage points.
Southern Miss has swept the last three C-USA series and has outscored its conference opponents, 180-61. The Golden Eagles continue to dominate on the offensive front with 27 home runs, 159 RBI, and a .470 slugging percentage in league play.
Luke Reynolds sits atop most of the conference’s offensive statistics. Reynolds' batting average (.380), slugging percentage (.711), on-base percentage (.534), runs scored (55) and walks (46) are the best across C-USA. While his team-leading 12 home runs ranks tied for second.
Nick Sandlin will start Friday's contest on the mound for his 12th start of the season. Sandlin leads C-USA with 106 strikeouts after fanning nine Blazers in last weekend's outing. Walker Powell will move up a day to Saturday's tilt for his 13th start of the season. After 58 innings of work, Powell has struck out 42 batters and has allowed only 26 runs, while Sunday's Southern Miss pitcher is yet to be decided at this juncture.
The Bulldogs will counter with junior right-hander Matt Miller (4-4, 3.88) on Friday, and junior southpaw Logan Robbins (7-0, 3.97) in the middle game. LA Tech has yet to announce a starter for the finale.
LA Tech (33-17, 16-8) travels to Hattiesburg after dropping only its second C-USA series of the season to Middle Tennessee. The Bulldogs leads the conference in batting average at .301, hits at 258, doubles at 57 and total bases at 397.
Southern Miss has won six-straight over LA Tech dating back to 2016. The Golden Eagles swept the Bulldogs last season in Ruston and outscored them 26-16.
