HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team returns home at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field this weekend to face East Carolina in its final home series of the 2012 season. Game times for the three-game set are 6 p.m., Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday, and 11 a.m., Sunday.
Heading into the weekend, the Golden Eagles (25-22 overall, 9-9 C-USA) look to snap a season-high, four-game losing streak.
The Golden Eagles and Pirates have met 35 times on the baseball diamond with Southern Miss holding a 19-16 advantage in the series, including USM having a 10-5 mark against ECU (32-16-1, 13-7-1) in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss took two of three games in Greenville last spring, but ECU registered a 4-0 decision in the C-USA tournament in Pearl.
The ECU series marks the final home appearances for five Golden Eagle seniors, including outfielder Kameron Brunty and infielder Ashley Graeter, along with pitchers Chase Horn, Josh Thomason and Matt Warren.
Freshman Mason Robbins continues to lead the team in hitting with a .349 batting average, after going 6-for-12 against Tulane last weekend. Greater is next at .322 for Southern Miss while Isaac Rodriguez is at .314.
The Golden Eagles will stick with its starting pitching rotation that it has used over the last three weekends. Junior righthander Andrew Pierce will take the mound in the opener for Southern Miss bringing a 6-3 record with a 1.98 earned run average into the contest. Redshirt freshman lefthander Jake Drehoff gets the call Saturday for the Golden Eagles with a 6-2 mark and a 3.12 ERA. Another southpaw, Robbins, will take the hill on Sunday having posted a 1-0 record with a 3.12 ERA.
The Pirates will counter with lefthanders in the first two games in the likes of Kevin Brandt (6-4, 2.06 ERA) and Tyler Joyner (5-2, 2.68), before going to Jharel Cotton (6-0, 3.12) in the series finale.
Saturday's game will be senior day, but it will also be "Pack the Pete in Pink" as well. Golden Eagle fans are encouraged to wear pink that day in support of the Pink Ribbon Fund and Breast Cancer Awareness in the Pine Belt.
Fans can purchase t-shirts courtesy of Elite Screenprinting for $12 at their 200 North 40th Ave., Suite 70, Hattiesburg location, right next to Mugshots Grill and Bar, with the proceeds going to the Pink Ribbon Fund.
