Cincinnati Defeats Southern Miss, 14-6
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Cincinnati's Craig Tewes went 3-for-5 at the plate with a homer and drove in four runs, along with a three-RBI performance by Ryan Minges to lead the Bearcats to a 14-6 victory over Southern Miss, today, in Conference USA action at Johnny Bench Field.
Bearcat (32-18, 14-9) pitcher freshman Tony Maynard (3-0) earned his third victory of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits, walking two and striking out three. P.J. Eilerman pitched the final two innings in his first career appearance, giving up three runs on three hits and walking one.
"We got down early and never recovered," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "Cincinnati got to Daniel Stewart early and then it steadily went from there. Our pitching staff walked 11, which is way too many if you want to have a serious chance of winning. We were held to seven hits and didn't get the hits we needed to produce the runs to stay in the game."
The Bearcats scored 14 runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while Southern Miss (21-30, 7-16) scored six runs on seven hits and committed one error. The Bearcats left 10 runners on base, and the Golden Eagles stranded six runners.
Cincinnati scored four runs in the first inning, keyed by a two-run single by Minges. Tewes' three-run homer was responsible for the runs in the second. The Bearcats scored five runs in the fourth inning without a hit but drew five walks. Niefer hit a double and was brought home on Fish's single to center in the sixth, and Kevin Wilson's solo homer in the eight tacked on the final run for Cincinnati.
Southern Miss scored three runs in the fourth inning, cutting the Bearcats lead to 7-4. Jeff Cook reached second on a two-base error by right fielder Niefer. Dusty Haley and Darren Welch drew back to back walks to load the bases. Bobby Garner belted a double down the right field line, driving in Cook and Haley. Clint Stoy grounded out to short, plating Welch from third for the third run of the inning.
Winningham doubled to center to lead off the eighth inning for the Golden Eagles and scored on a two-out double down the right field line by Rusty McDaniels. Brad Montgomery belted his second homer of the season over left field to account for two runs in the ninth inning.
Tewes led the Bearcats with three hits in five at bats and the other eight hits were spread around by eight different hitters. Allen Winningham led Southern Miss with two hits, and Montgomery and Garner each drove in two runs each.
Daniel Stewart (4-4) dropped his fourth decision of the year, pitching three innings, giving up 10 runs on five hits, walking six and striking out six. Jarrad Robinson pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up two runs and walking three. Anthony Rawson cam e on in relief in the fourth inning, pitching 1.1 innings, striking out two. Nathan Bowden pitched the final three innings, giving u p two runs on six hits and walking two.
The final game of the three-game conference series will be played on Sunday at Johnny Bench Field, beginning at Noon, central time.
