HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior pitcher Andrew Pierce was named to the 60-man Golden Spikes Award Watch List, announced by USA Baseball, Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Spikes Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player by USA Baseball. The list of candidates will continue to change based on performance until the 30 semifinalists are announced on May 28.
The final award will be presented live on the MLB Network on July 19.
Pierce is a Conference USA-leading 9-1 in 11 starts. He has three complete games, including two of his last three starts. He holds a 2.13 earned run average, which is second on the team and sixth in Conference USA. He is also sixth in opponent batting average, as foes are hitting at just a .206 clip. Pierce leads C-USA in innings pitched, having thrown 84.2 innings this year. He has gone at least 6 2/3 innings in each start this year. The senior has also struck out 77 batters this year, which is fourth in the league.
Pierce has been nearly unhittable in conference play, holding a perfect 5-0 record, including a 10-1 victory over then 24th-ranked Rice, when he allowed just one run in seven innings of work.
