HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss senior centerfielder Dillon Day (Geismar, La.) has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week after his consistently productive performances at the plate led the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 last week, including a C-USA series sweep of UAB, in an announcement on Monday by the league office.
Day hit safely in all four games last week, collecting a .667 batting average (10-
for-15) with a home run and six RBI. He ended the week with an on base percentage of .706 and had a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Day started the week with three hits against SEC foe Alabama and then went 7-for-11 against the Blazers in the Golden Eagles' three-game sweep. In the first game of the doubleheader against UAB on Saturday, he collected a season-high four hits and drove in a career-best four runs. Day also hit his first home run since the 2010 season in that contest.
In addition, he added a hit and an RBI in the series opener and finished the weekend with two hits and a run scored in the finale.
Day became the fifth different Southern Miss player in the last five weeks to be named either C-USA Hitter or Pitcher of the Week. This is his second career weekly award, also capturing the nod back in the 2010 season. It also is the first time the Golden Eagles have won either of the weekly awards over five-straight voting weeks in their C-USA history.
The Pitcher of the Week honor went to UAB sophomore RHP Alex Luna, who faced the minimum in a complete-game, three-hit shutout over Alabama State.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they entertain ULM at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
