HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team looks to snap a current two-game losing streak when they open a four-game road swing Tuesday night with South Alabama. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m., from Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile.
The Golden Eagles (30-12) dropped their first C-USA series of the season at home last weekend to Old Dominion, but still lead the Monarchs, Florida Atlantic and Charlotte by a game in the league standings. The squad also remains ranked this week and are as high as No. 25 by D1Baseball.com and the USA Today coaches rankings.
Eighth-year head coach Scott Berry’s program plays a South Alabama team that enters the contest with a 26-15 record, having won five of its last six games.
It will be the second meeting between the two clubs this season and Southern Miss looks to sweep the season series for the first time since 2015, after winning a 4-2 decision over the Jaguars on March 28 at Pete Taylor Park. Taylor Braley limited the Jaguars to two runs on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings to register the victory.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a two-run single from freshman Matt Wallner in the third and a solo homer in the sixth by Cole Donaldson. After the Jaguars scored twice in the seventh, Hunter Slater scored in the bottom half of the frame on a wild pitch after tripling. Wallner threw a scoreless ninth to garner the save.
Heading into this game, the Golden Eagles continue to lead Conference USA in hitting with a .310 team batting mark, as seven players continue to hit over .300. Those include Matthew Guidry (.372), Jake Viaene (.350), Wallner (.349), Mason Irby (.344), Dylan Burdeaux (.333), Taylor Braley (.320) and Hunter Slater (.318).
The Golden Eagle pitching staff also leads the league with a 4.23 ERA.
Junior right-hander Calder Mikell (0-0, 4.50 ERA) is expected to get this second start of the season against the Jaguars.
The South Alabama contest represents one of two remaining non-conference tilts remaining for the Golden Eagles during the regular season. Southern Miss also plays Southeastern Louisiana, Tuesday, May 16, at MGM Park in Biloxi. Game time for that contest is at 7:05 p.m.
