April 15, 2013
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team travels to Trustmark Park for the second and final time this spring when they take on nationally ranked Ole Miss, Tuesday, in a 6:30 p.m., contest.
The Golden Eagles (18-17) come into the game on a hot streak, having won a season-best seven consecutive games and currently are tied in first place in the Conference USA standings with Houston. This will be the first of two meetings with the Rebels as Southern Miss will be the host for the second game coming up on May 14.
Southern Miss plays an Ole Miss squad that has posted a 26-10 overall mark and is 7-8 in Southeastern Conference play heading into a Monday night matchup at Memphis. The Rebels are fresh off a three-game home sweep over Alabama over the weekend.
Junior left-handed pitcher A.J. Glasshof (Sugar Land, Texas) is expected to get the start for Southern Miss having posted a 0-2 record and a 4.50 earned run average. He had his best outing of the year last Tuesday in his first start of the year at New Orleans, allowing an unearned run over six innings with five hits and a walk with a season-best six strikeouts.
The Rebels will counter with righthander Josh Laxer, who has posted a 2-0 mark with a 2.37 ERA.
Current C-USA Hitter of the Week Chase Fowler leads the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .333 batting average, one homer and a team-high 19 runs batted in. He has added seven doubles and a team-best three triples. Followed behind Fowler is Mason Robbins at .323.
Sophomore Austin Roussel (Hester, La.) has a .342 batting average, but missed 12 with a hand injury. He returned last Wednesday night to action and had a hit and drove in a pair of runs.
The Golden Eagles continue to play solid defense and have turned 47 doubles plays this season. They had an eight-game streak of turning at least one snapped in the final game of the Marshall series, after getting four in that series opener.
Southern Miss now ranks No. 3 in total double plays in the country.
Following the Ole Miss contest, the Golden Eagles travel to FedExPark this weekend to face Memphis in a key C-USA series. The game times are 6:30 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
