HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action Tuesday night when they travel to Metairie, La., to face nationally ranked LSU in a 7 p.m., contest at Zephyr Field, the Triple A home of the Miami Marlins.
The game is part of the Wally Pontiff, Jr., Foundation Classic, honoring the life of the former LSU baseball player with proceeds of the event going to local charities.
Southern Miss (21-16) looks to continue its winning ways after taking two of three games at UAB over the weekend to win its fifth-straight Conference USA series to start the league season. The Golden Eagles rallied in the ninth in both victories over the weekend, which included bouncing back from a four-run deficit in the series finale to win in 10 innings.
The two schools renew a series that dates back to the 1928 season. LSU holds a 37-11 edge, having won six-straight games between the two schools. The last Southern Miss win came in the final contest of a three-game set at the original Alex Box Stadium on March 11, 2007. The Tigers grabbed the last meeting in 2012 in an 8-3 victory over the Golden Eagles at Zephyr Field (April 11). The two teams were supposed to play in this event last season but that game was rained out.
For the Golden Eagles, sophomore Tim Lynch (Jupiter, Fla.) continues to swing a hot bat after collecting three hits in each of the final two games of the UAB series while driving in a career-high four runs in the Sunday contest. That career-high total included a bases-clearing double in the ninth to tie the game, which eventually went to the extra frame.
Lynch also leads the team in batting average at .308, having hit safely in nine consecutive games while also tallying a team-high 19-game reached base streak. This season, Lynch has eight doubles, a home run and 23 runs batted in this season.
One other Southern Miss player, freshman Dylan Burdeaux (West Monroe, La.), has hit safely in each of his last seven games and holds a .254 batting mark with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 17 RBI.
Against the Tigers, Southern Miss looks to send sophomore right-handed pitcher Cody Carroll to the mound against LSU (27-9-1). In five starts this season, Carroll has amassed a 2-0 record with a 2.88 ERA. LSU will send freshman right-hander Alden Cartwright, who has notched a 1-0 record with a 1.23 ERA in 12 relief appearances, against Carroll.
Following the LSU contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to face C-USA foe Louisiana Tech. Game times are 6 p.m., Friday, with fireworks scheduled following the game, 4 p.m., on Saturday at part of the 2014 Eagle Fest celebration, and Sunday at 1 p.m.
