Golden Eagles Fall in Series Finale with FIU 10-4 Sunday
Scott Berry didn't mince words in summing up a disappointing Sunday afternoon of Southern Mississippi baseball at Pete Taylor Park.
With a 22-10 overall record, 8-3 Conference-USA record, the Golden Eagles travel to Miami for its second road conference series of the season starting with a 6 p.m. contest, a 5 p.m. Saturday game and an 11 a.m., series finale on Sunday.
Southern Miss won its first road series against FAU winning two of the three contests and outscored the Owls 24-11. Heading into the weekend, Southern Miss sits third in league play, 2 ½ games ahead of the Panthers.
After 32 games played, Matt Wallner and Hunter Slater lead the team in both batting average (.357) and hits with 45 and 40 respectively. While Wallner's bat continues to stay hot after homering in the last three Sundays, Slater posts the longest hitting streak having successfully hit in the past five games.
FIU (16-17, 6-6 C-USA) has had a week's rest prior to the meeting against Southern Miss. The Panthers won the series against UAB last weekend taking the final two games of the series and outscoring the Blazers 10-6.
Juan Teixeria leads the Panthers with a .359 batting average but three Panthers players, Austin Shenton, Eddie Silva and Jose Garcia, have all blasted eight home runs this season. Silva sits atop of the conference with a .708 slugging percentage having homered four times in the last seven games.
Southern Miss took last year's series at Pete Taylor Park winning the first two games of the series. The weekend's match up features two teams that are in the top three in the conference for runs scored, home runs, slugging percentage and batting average.
