Baseball Set to Entertain Marshall This Weekend
April 11, 2013
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team looks to improve on its current season-best winning streak when they entertain Marshall this weekend in a three-game Conference USA series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles, which have won four-straight contests heading into the series, take on the Thundering Herd Friday in a 6 p.m., start, Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, including the flagship station WKZW-FM, 94.3, in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area.
At 15-17 overall and 5-4 in C-USA play, the Golden Eagles are just a game back of Houston and Rice in the league standings, who are both 6-3. Marshall, which holds a 13-19 overall mark, is just a game and a half back in the standings at 3-3 in league play.
The two schools have played 27 times in baseball with the Golden Eagles leading 19-8 in a series, which dates back to the 2005 season. Southern Miss swept that initial three-game set in Hattiesburg, but the two teams did not face each other as C-USA foes until the following season.
Southern Miss has now won six of seven series since the Herd joined the league, dropping its only set in 2010 at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W. Va., by losing a pair of games. The Golden Eagles are 8-1 in league games and 11-1 overall against Marshall in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss also has won five of the last six meetings.
In the series against the Herd, Southern Miss will use the same rotation for the third consecutive weekend. Sophomore lefthander Jake Drehoff (Alpharetta, Ga.) gets the start in the opener on Friday as he has put together a 1-4 record with a 4.30 earned run average. Drehoff will be countered by Marshall left-handed pitcher Wayland Moore (2-1, 5.14 ERA).
The Saturday tilt features both teams' aces as the Golden Eagles are set to send senior righthander Andrew Pierce (6-1, 1.95 ERA) against Herd righty Aaron Blair (5-1, 2.11 ERA). The finale shows USM junior right-handed hurler Conor Fisk (3-1, 1.50 ERA) set to face Marshall righthander Michael Taylor (3-3, 3.25).
