Eagles Fall to MSU at Trustmark Park
Hunter Renfroe had three hits and drove in a career-high six runs to lead No. 8 Mississippi State to a 13-5 non-conference baseball victory here Tuesday night at Trustmark.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team makes its second visit in 2014 to Trustmark Park in Pearl, Tuesday night, when they take on nationally ranked Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m.
This will be the only meeting between the two schools in baseball this season as the Golden Eagles (19-14) look to snap a five-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. The first trip of the year to Trustmark Park saw Southern Miss defeat in-state foe Ole Miss, 5-3, allowing the team to improve to 13-9 in games played at that facility dating back to the 2006 campaign.
Southern Miss enters the game having won 12 of its last 16 games, including its last four midweek contests. The squad has also captured its first four C-USA series to start the league season, taking two of three games from Middle Tennessee at Pete Taylor Park last weekend. The four series wins has put the team in a four-way tie in C-USA for second place in terms of winning percentage along with Rice, UTSA and East Carolina, trailing only UAB in the standings.
Offensively, Golden Eagle designated hitter Matt Durst continues to lead the team having hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games, batting .338 with three doubles, four home runs and 15 RBI over that stretch.
Sophomore Tim Lynch is next on the club in hitting with .278 batting mark, having reached base in a team-high, 15-straight games heading into the MSU contest.
Fifth-year Southern Miss coach Scott Berry looks to send sophomore right-hander Cody Carroll to the mound, who has posted a 2-0 record with a 2.75 earned run average in four starts this season. Carroll has fanned 18 batters in 19 2/3 innings this spring.
The Golden Eagles will be the designated visiting team in this contest against the Bulldogs (20-13).
Following the MSU contest, the Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face C-USA leader UAB in a three-game series. The series opens with a 6:30 p.m., contest on Friday, before a 2 p.m., single contest on Saturday and a 1 p.m., series finale on Sunday. All three games will be played at Young Memorial Field on the UAB campus.
