HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After seeing its six-game winning strapped snapped with an extra-inning loss Tuesday night, Southern Miss looks to return to its winning ways this weekend when they entertain FIU in a three-game Conference USA series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles enter the weekend with a 24-6 overall record and a league-leading 8-1 mark in C-USA action. The Panthers, who split a two-game midweek series at Mississippi State, come to Hattiesburg 17-12 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Under eighth-year coach Scott Berry, the Golden Eagles are ranked nationally as high as No. 17 in five different polls and look to continue their solid play at home this weekend as they are 15-2 at The Pete this spring and a 52-8 mark since late in the 2015 campaign.
The team ranks first in both offense and pitching this spring in C-USA. The Golden Eagles are first in batting average (.307), runs (240), hits (329), home runs (44) and stolen bases. The pitching staff is first in earned run average (3.40), wins (24), strikeouts (283) and opponent batting average (.238).
This will be only the third series between these two clubs with FIU holding a 4-2 overall advantage in the series. The Panthers swept the Golden Eagles in Miami on the final regular season weekend last spring. Southern Miss won two of three games in Hattiesburg in 2015.
Game times for the weekend including a 6 p.m., start on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday and a 12 noon start, Sunday.
