HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss baseball team plays its second and final game of the season at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Tuesday, when they take on Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (22-7 overall, 8-1 C-USA) return from a weekend trip to the state of North Carolina in which they swept league foe Charlotte in a three-game set. The squad outscored the 49ers 34-13 in the series and the club batted .412 with five homers and 31 runs batted in the set.
A pair of seniors, first baseman Tim Lynch and shortstop Nick Dawson, enjoyed as good as week as you could have as Lynch tallied a .688 batting average over the four-game stretch last week, while Dawson hit .615.
Dawson leads the squad in batting average this season with a .398 mark, while Lynch is next at .393. Three other Golden Eagles hold at least a .300 average this season as graduate transfer Jake Sandlin ranks third at .381, followed by junior Dylan Burdeaux who sits at .331 and sophomore Taylor Braley with a .323 batting mark.
Braley also leads the team in homers with 10, marking the first Golden Eagle time a Golden Eagle has tallied double-digit round-trippers since Blake Brown clubbed 10 in 2013.
The Golden Eagles bring in a six-game winning streak over the Rebels (22-7), including a 6-5 decision in Pearl last Aprl in the teams' last meeting. Ole Miss enters this week ranked No. 14 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Following the Ole Miss contest, the Golden Eagles return home this weekend to Pete Taylor Park to face C-USA foe Middle Tennessee in a three-game set. Game times are 6 p.m., on Friday, 2 p.m., on Saturday and 1 p.m., on Sunday.
